Feb 17, David rated it really liked it. The new book is greatly expanded and updates all of the information that was in the original book. It is a very well written, informational examination of many different scenarios regarding violence and the use of firearms.
Secondly, this is a general treatise based on a survey of the law as it was 30 years ago. You can gtavest your copy thw the new book by clicking here. I try to offer them a broad understanding of the use of inn as it applies in my state, and I always suggested they read this book. The idea was to measure human performance in simulated combat after receiving an injury hhe caused a significant loss of blood.
Those lessons are priceless, and this book should be required reading for anyone concerned with self-defense. Since this article was written, Ayoob published Deadly Force: The new tome gives the reader the benefit of more than three decades of additional research and experience as an court recognized expert that Ayoob has amassed.
For example, in one class students volunteered to donate blood just before shooting a high-speed qualification course. This is an amazing book that can help anyone better understand the difficulties of the law when dealing with a self defense shooting or massad ayoob in the gravest extreme an accidental shooting. He is very gracious and exceptionally knowledgeable about firearms and shooting.

I know people personally who have taken classes from Massad F. Ayoob. I also found his name mentioned in a recommended reading list on Kathy Jackson's website, 'Cornered Cat'.

Mas Ayoob is well known in law enforcement, in pistol competition and as a self defense writer and trainer. He has also testified for many years as an expert witness in self defense cases. This book is a short and concise summary of the legal, practical and mental preparation you should undertake if you plan to study the ways of self-defense. Even though the book is 30 years old and needs to be updated somewhat, it still shares enough useful wisdom to be worth reading.

If you own a firearm, or are thinking of owning a firearm, this is an essential read.
A must-read for all who have to ponder whether or not they want to own firearms. I was on the fence, and this absolutely was the one thing that pushed me to my decision. There is nothing biased here, and no agenda in the writing. The author clearly points out facts, discusses issues, and offers things to think about in deciding whether or not to own a firearm.
This book really made me think.

An excellent book. The author covers the source material in straight forward and engaging manner. My one problem with the book is that it seems to present females as a lesser sex incapable of handling a firearm.
This books has earned its status as a classic. Ayoob is brutally honest about both himself the realities of his subject. Some of the information is a little out-of-date, but that's to be forgiven. The principles are solid and timeless.

A conscientious gun owner should already know most of the wisdom in this book. It would be good for folks new to ownership. Chapters 13 and 14 should be skipped - they have a lot of dated, false information about ballistics and firearms.

I think every adult should read this book. It is a great book for explaining the need for a firearm for protection. It doesn’t sugar coat anything either. The firearm is a tool, nothing more, nothing less. When a bad guy is out to do you some serious harm, a firearm is really the only thing that can level the playing field. But Massad Ayoob explains it much better than I do.

Yes, this book is a classic. I've seen it referred to in many articles I've read. But why hasn't it been updated? It's 35 years old and is woefully out of date. The guns discussed, the calibers discussed, the role women play or do not play in self defense -- all of these and more are beyond outdated. This is an awesome book! It's reached legendary status in the self-defense world, and I was very happy to get my hands on it, since it's been out of print for awhile. Some of the tactics/discussions in it are blatantly dated (the author has changed his view on some of the things he covers in the book since it was written, such as using hand loads for self-defense, etc.), but the value of this book is really in it's ability to force the reader to really think through the appropriate reasons to us...more
Very good introduction to firearms for protection. Ayoob discusses choosing a firearms, the necessity of regular practice, general tactics (such as when to go looking around your house and when to hole up in a room), and legal issues. The sections on legal issues are sobering and should be read by anyone who owns a firearm. One caution: there is some pretty rough language, particularly in the beginning.
Hard-boiled non-fiction. It may seem like a no-brainer of a pairing, or a non-sequitur, but in any case Ayoob writes quite well about firearms and self-defense. 'Chickenshit' was a favorite epithet -- to slander himself. Ayoob is very sober here; this is no trifling subject. Published in 1980, and coming from a Northeastern milieu, it makes for fascinating atmosphere in a time of stagflation, muggings, and blue steel.
Excellent book. Straight to the point. While the idea of being forced to use a firearm is not a happy one, Ayoob discusses not only circumstances in which you may have to do so, but also the aftermath of police interaction, courts, emotional trauma, etc.
If you are considering a firearm for either home protection of personal carry, this short read is a must. Ayoob has decades of firearms training, and is plain spoken.

Clear discussion of when deadly force is legally permissible for the average citizen. Ayoob explains the responsibility that goes along with carrying a concealed firearm, and argues that anyone who does so must do everything possible to avoid using it. An eye-opener for anyone who wants to carry a gun 'for protection,' this book ought to be required reading for armed citizens.

Extremely grim and predictably reactionary book on gun laws and practical methods and approaches to using handguns for personal defense. Despite the pretty gross tone it takes, it's full of extremely useful advice with no sugarcoating. By the way, I have placed this in the 'sports' category because I have no shelf for 'books about shooting people dead'.

This is an amazing book that can help anyone better understand the difficulties of the law when dealing with a self defense shooting or even an accidental shooting. The mental process and adrenaline and what to expect on all angles and fronts is what this book will do.
